Snorkeling in Hong Kong?

Hi, I%26#39;m visiting Hong Kong in early April and was wandering if snorkeling was an option on one of the islands%26#39; beaches or anywhere else in particular? Has anyone ever done it? For a few nights I%26#39;m staying at Silvermine beach resort on Llantau island, the hotel is, obviously, advertised as a beach resort so, in general, what is the water like in early April, is it warm, clear? Thank you for your help.

I fear you might be in for a little shock when you see %26#39;Silvermine beach resort%26#39;. True, it is on a beach, but Silvermine Bay is not one of HK%26#39;s best beaches, and I don%26#39;t think there is much coral around there to snorkel around. Further along the coast of South Lantau there are better beaches, but not sure about the water clearness.

Heading up to NW Hong Kong, especially around Sai Kung, will get you clearer water and some corals. However, at the end of April, it will still be a little cool.

I wouldn%26#39;t even bother trying to snorkel. Several reasons:

1. Western waters are pretty grim and not clear at all 2. the temp is too low at the moment (less than 20 celcius) unless you have a wetsuit

3. there won%26#39;t be anything to see - most of the coral and fish life is in the clearer eastern waters (I think Drumbrake means NE Hong Kong) off the Sai kung coast.

If you really want to do this then consider that most of the decent places to snorkel in the east will require boat access. Best place to go (because it is fairly shallow and also close to Sai Kung Pier) is Sharp Island. There is a bay on the NW side of Sharp Island which has some nice coral and fish in about 2 metres of water (at low tide).

Yes North east! Swimming in waters in north west HK around Tuen Mun would be a definite health risk.
