short trips from Hong Kong

Hi Everyone

Our family has 2 weeks in Hong Kong in June but we would like to spend some of that time doing a short trip or two (3-5 days) into China mainland- maybe by train, either an overnighter or less than 4 hours by day.

I%26#39;d love to hear about any places that you%26#39;ve enjoyed that wont be too much of a drama to get to with 4 kids in tow. (hmmm well,everything%26#39;s a drama with 4 kids of course!!but we are always optimistic!) We don%26#39;t necessarily need big tourist attractions, just to experience a slice of Chinese life with maybe some nice scenery and good food along the way.

Thanks !

Trixie,

Have you thought about Macau? A 1.5 hour boat ride by turbojet is fast, comfortable, and enjoyable. Macau is full of the old and new culture of Macau. There are the Casinos but the attractions I like are the old school eateries and buildings.

For China, Shenzhen is a close place from Hong Kong. 1 hour train ride from Hong Kong gets you there. A little dirty but different culture. Beware of the pickpockets. You stand on a city corner street and watch your purse.

Assuming you don%26#39;t speak Manadarin, Yangshuo is a good choice, It may be wet in June (what part of southern China isn%26#39;t?) You could take a train from Guangzhou or Shenzhen to Guilin (overnight) and stay 2-3 nights in Yangshuo then fly back to Shenzhen. In Yangshuo you can rent bicycles, ride bamboo rafts, watch cormorant fishing, shop for souvenirs %26amp; eat at cafes with English menus - food your kids will eat.
