Train from Shanghai to Nanjing

I am taking the train from Shanghai to Nanjing. Does a train ticket need to be reserved or purchased ahead? If so, from where? Or, can you simply buy a ticket at the railroad station on the day of travel?

And, if there is more than one station, which train station has trains leaving for Nanjing?

Thank you for any suggestions.

The trains for Nanjing leave from the main Shanghai station. There is only one train I think that leaves from the Shanghai South station.

There are quite a few trains throughout the day so you could buy them from the station that day depending on when you want to travel. The actual ticket office is slightly away from the main station in a seperate building. There is an English speaking counter or an automated machine. If in doubt just get your hotel to buy the ticket for you - they will only charge a tiny fee.

Best take one of the D or T trains as they are faster - About 2 hours on one of the fast trains.

I would prefer to pre-buy, and definitely if travelling on a Fri/Sat/Sun.

D trains leave from Shanghai main train station.

purchasing ahead will be better, and D train (express train) ticket will be available 10 days in advance.

Shanghai Railway Station will be the one has the trains leaving for Nanjing, this one is in downtown area.
