Can this be done? Or the two cable car stations at the mountain top are too far apart for old folks like me to walk from on station to the other?

Whichever cable car you use, considerable walking is necessary to get to the hotels and scenic spots. It should not be attempted unless you have a reasonable leverl of fitness on steep and uneven ground.
