Trip advice - last minute guide availability?

My wife and I have been considering doing a 12-15 day tour of China. We have traveled before, but had some bad luck with transportation and accommodations on our last trip (Italy) and it was just more stressful than a vacation should be, so we thought the price of a tour company may be worth it this time to avoid worrying and just sit back and let others do the work. However, after reading enough of these forums, I鈥檓 starting to believe we can actually do China ourselves like many of you suggest. The route would be something like this: Beijing-Xian-Guilin-Yangshuo-Shanghai (maybe Hong Kong, depending on our budget). Assuming we can handle booking flights and hotels online, my next question then concerns availability of guides. Is it safe to assume that we can wait until arrival to find a local guide to help us for the day (if we decide we want one that day)? Or should they be contacted in advance? Thanks so much for any info you鈥檙e willing to share!

The popular guides mentioned for Beijing in TripAdvisor forum should probably be booked in advance. Otherwise, bring along a list of recommendations from TripAdvisor and try your luck when you get here. However I think it would still work better if you contact guides in advance and have some correspondence to get to know each other and figure out what sights and experiences work for you and which don%26#39;t.

Hi POatch

Am planning a similar itinerary for July. When are you going? And it is doable on your own. I have obtained so much information and advice from these forums, that to do it through an agent is definitely $ you could put into doing what you want. Went last July to China and did Shanghai, Suzhou, Beijing, Xian, Shanghai. Did that thru an agent and did have a fabulous time. More confident now and having been there know I can plan, execute this time.

Hopefully we%26#39;re going in May, although it could end up getting postponed a bit. Thanks everyone.
