hotel recommendations esp. with children along?

we%26#39;ll be spending a day in macau by the end of this month - coming from HK via the ferry - and would just like to ask for your recommended hotels. i%26#39;ll be bringing my wife and 5-year old kids (yup, i got a pair of twins!) with me so i%26#39;m pretty concerned about making sure the place factors this in.

also, the price has to be reasonable, so places like the wynn, the venetian, mgm, and grand emperor are out of our price range - since we%26#39;ll probably be spending most of the day outside, visiting the different tourist spots.

right now, the metropole is our top choice (but we have yet to make the reservation) since it appears to be in the middle of everything, and reasonably close to senado square, st. dominic%26#39;s church, and the st. paul ruins.

hope you guys can help me out. thanks in advance!

Not in the location you want, but the Pousada de Coloane has an outdoor swimming pool and you can walk down to the beach. Perfect for kids if the weather is nice I%26#39;d think. About 25 minutes by bus to the centre.

If you are going on a night Sunday - Thursday (as opposed to Friday or Saturday) my first suggestion would be the Royal - it%26#39;s not a casino hotel so it doesn%26#39;t have strange / sleazy types of people in the foyer, and there is a park with a small playground just across the road. With the boys%26#39; shorter legs, it would probably take you about 20 - 25 minutes to walk to Senado Square, or there is a very useful bus stop just at the bottom of the park (buses to downtown, Taipa %26amp; Coloane) and another one on the same street as the hotel (buses to Sands, Fishermen%26#39;s Wharf, mainland China border gate).

If you want to be closer downtown I%26#39;d suggest Beverly Plaza, which is just behind the old Lisboa. It was renovated quite recently, and has convenience stores and a couple of supermarkets close by.

thanks for your suggestions!

while we would like to consider a hotel that offers amenities like a kids pool or access to the beach, we probably wouldn%26#39;t have to time to use them since we%26#39;ll most likely be out of the hotel visiting the different tourist spots.

to give you a better idea of our itinerary, we%26#39;ll be taking the ferry from HK on saturday afternoon, head straight to the hotel, drop off the stuff, and then try to visit a couple of tourist sites before calling it a day and maybe have dinner outside the hotel.

the following day, sunday, our flight back home is at 3pm, giving us about 3-4 hours in the morning (after breakfast either at the hotel or in a nearby restaurant) to visit some other sites.

we%26#39;d really like to squeeze in as many tourist spots as we can, so a hotel whose location that allows us to do that would be really the best for us and the family.

hope i%26#39;m not giving you guys too much of a headache on your recommendations...

thanks again!

and before i forget (though this may be a bit off-topic), would you advise that we carry with us the chinese translation of the different places we want to visit?

i%26#39;m just anticipating the time when the taxi driver we encounter can%26#39;t understand english that well.

Saturday night is the expensive night in Macau. I%26#39;d advise you to go to one of the agents at the Macau ferry pier in Sheung Wan, HK, and check what prices they are offering for a package that night for the hotels that oisann suggested. I use Macau South China Travel in the ferry terminal usually.

Yes, Saturdays are very expensive; you might have to look a bit further down than the Royal at weekends. If you want to have your hotel safely booked before you arrive in HK, then have a look at www.macau.com, or check out the list of hotels %26amp; guesthouses on the Accommodations page at cn.macautourism.gov.mo .Many of the cheaper places do not have online booking, nor do all their staff speak English, so it is advisable to fax bookings and requests so that they can give the details to someone who has enough English to reply to you. Ko Wah and Ole London are conveniently situated (if Beverly Plaza is too expensive). The East Asia and the Central advertise very cheap rates, but they are NOT family-friendly places.

If you prefer waiting until you arrive in HK, then Drumbrake%26#39;s advice of using an agent at the ferry pier is excellent.

When you arrive in Macau, walk to your right directly after exiting immigration and you will find the tourist office - they provide free trilingual maps and many other useful materials (also free) which are designed specially for both self-guided walking and showing to taxi drivers. It is true that very few of the drivers speak any English, so this is important.

Hi Canon Guy,

We are also a family of four visiting H.K./Macau over easter and have had some difficulty finding %26#39;family%26#39; accommodation.

With the very capable help of Oisann however, we have booked 2 rooms at the Hotel Royal for HK$650 per night per room which is incredible for 5 star. Even their Saturday night rate is only HK1000 per night.

We used the following very reputable Australian travel website to book. Have used them many times before and always excellent. Perhaps worth a look for you too ?

P.s would love to hear how you and the family enjoy Macau

you can stay at metropark hotel. its away from the vicinity of casino hotels. they offer a free shuttle bus from the ferry terminal to hotel and vice versa. okay for kids...

Hi there

We%26#39;ll be in Macau, travelling with our 2 children (ages 7 and 9).

I%26#39;ve booked accommodation at the Holiday Inn, only HKD600 per night. Apparently rooms are large with 2 double beds in each and hotel is in a good location.

Go directly to the hotel website for the best prices.

Good luck!
