Couple months ago, we booked a tour in China but that has now been cancel due to not enough people going. We now are deciding to do China by ourselves. We have 14 days and we want to go to Beijing, Xian, Guilin, and Hong Kong. I am looking for experts to help me out...
How many days should I stay at each of those locations?
Can someone recommend good 4 to 5 star hotels?
I probably have more questions later but that is it for now. TIA

I presume you can fly into Beijing and out of Hong Kong?
Beijing (5 days) -- overnight train -- Xi%26#39;an (2 days) -- flight -- Guilin/Yangshuo (4 days) -- flight/overnight train -- Shenzhen (transit) -- walk across border/ferry/bus -- Hong Kong (3 days)
Look at the hotel reviews section of TripAdvisor for your hotel choices.

Thanks ellyse! Do you think we have enough time to book some tours with the concierge? I assume that 4 to 5 star hotels shouldn%26#39;t be a problem. So far this is our itineries:
Day 1 - Fly to Beijing
Day 2 - Arrived in Beijing (Park Plaza)
Day 3 - Tianamen Square and Forbidden City
Day 4 - Great Wall
Day 5 - Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven
Day 6 - Fly to Xian (Hyatt Regency)
Day 7 - Terra Cotta
Day 8 - Fly to Guilin Elephant Trunk and cave (Sheraton)
Day 9 - Li River
Day 10 - Free day, night time flight to Hong Kong (Harbour Plaza)
Day 11 - Victoria Peak/Stanley Market
Day 12 - Shopping
Day 13 - Shopping
Day 14 - Fly back home
How does that look....
In terms of number of days in each place it looks generally ok. I guess that you only put the highlights as yoiu can do more in a day in Beijing than just the Forbidden City and Tiananmen sq.
In terms of ';tours'; you only need the help of the concierge to get you to the Great Wall. For other places just get a good guide book about China and take taxis or the subway. In the Forbidden City they have audio guides for rent.
Thanks JPDeM! I guess we%26#39;ll hire a tour guide for Great Wall Mutianyu section. And everything else in Beijing we should be able to do by ourselves. Time for me to go out and buy a guide book.
