5 or 6 days in HK? Cost?

Hi there,

I was wondering if I should do 5 or 6 days in Hong Kong if I%26#39;d like to explore the city a bit, take a trip to the mainland to Canton area (is this possible?) and see Macau and of course other popular sights.

Disneyland is of no interest to me...I%26#39;m not a %26#39;rides person%26#39; - interested in getting a feel for the place, seeing the big attractions, and getting a couple side trips in?

I am wondering if I could do it in 5 days as I%26#39;m just a bit worried about cost...this is going to be at the end of 6 weeks in Asia, and I have no idea how much I should be budgeting for the city...even the YMCA seems to cost a fortune on a backpackers budget! Could someone also give me an idea of cost for entry fees to major attractions/ travel costs for public transport/ a trip to Guangzhou / trip to Macau / local market shops?

Thanks so much!

Most of the best sites in Hong kong are free or very cheap.

The harbour view from TST promenade: free

A trip on a tram on HK island: HK$2

A trip on the star ferry: HK$2-3

Bus up to Peak - under HK$10

Walk down from the Peak - free and a memorable experience.

Museums: HK$10 or free on wednesdays

A bowl of wonton noodles - under HK$20

A trip to Macau costs HK$142+ each way on the ferry.

A trip to China means you need a visa - cost depends on passport.

Hotels are expensive - but a dorm bed in the YMCA is not expensive. OR there are plenty of hostels and guesthouses with cheaper rooms.

Lots of hostels in tsim sha tsui. Decent ones go about 150HKD for a single occupancy with a private CR.

A lot of places/attractions do not require admission charges:

Avenue of Stars - free

Symphony of Lights show - free

Golden Bauhinia Square, flag raising ceremony - free

Cheung Chau island- cost of ferry ride

Po Lin Monastery, Tian Tan Buddha, Wisdom Path- free

Tai O fishing village - free

Ten thousands Buddhas Monastery - free

Nan Lian Garden - free

Stanley Market - free

Scenic bus ride - cost of bus fare

End to end Tram ride - HKD 2 per trip

For public transport, get a Octopus card, for 5/6days, HKD200 is sufficient.

As suggested by previous poster, stay in guesthouses or hostel. There are a lot in TST and Mongkok area.

Budget at HKD 150-200 per room per night.
