What does the average meal cost in Beijing, Shanghai, Xian? We would not be looking for nice, expensive restaurants; rather just “normal” places where you can stop and eat some authentic cuisine after some sightseeing? I understand it will vary, but maybe just a range. Thanks.
Average cost of meal for tourist?
If you eat Chinese food in a regular restaurant (not too fancy) it will cost between $5 and $10 including beer. Probably closer to $5 actually.
For this, do not eat in the hotel or the restaurant across the street from the hotel. If you want to know if it is a good restaurant, just check how busy they are. The locals know. Most places have english menus or photos.

If you eat out at restaurants where the locals eat it%26#39;s super cheap.
I.E: Muslim St in Xian. 1 serve of lamb kebab (6 sticks) is RMB1.
If you look on the Fodors or Frommers website they list restaurants %26amp; give a guide of prices per meal.
Street food: possibly 3-20 RMB
Local hole-in-wall restaurant with no English menu: probably 5-20 RMB
Local not-so-small restaurant with no English menu: 10-40 RMB
Newer, cleaner, brighter local restaurant (usually still no English menu, or badly-translated English menu): 30-60 RMB
Reasonable mid-priced restaurant with reasonably-translated English menu: 50-150 RMB
